Cartographer: Microsoft Expedia
Streets maps
Thanks
to Donald McLennan for this section
Microsoft Expedia Streets provides detail maps, travel information and
easy-to-use tools help you plan your trips down to the last detail. We
have found that the quality of the maps is very compatible with the GPS
Pilot software. The following discussion provides the Streets settings
and a step-by-step process for extracting the maps from Streets and loading
into GPS Pilot using the ‘Cartographer' utility.

From the Streets menu, you have several options to display items on the map.
Select/deselect the various View options for display.
Streets provides a Location Sensor to display the longitude
and latitude position on the chart. From the Streets menu, Tools, display
the Location Sensor. From the Location Sensor drop down list, select Decimal
Degrees.
When displaying the map, the object is to display the desired level of
map detail. We've found that the Zoom level magnification display
of 2-3 miles provides a good working map, with streets, street names,
highways, etc. Lower level of magnification provides a good overview map,
but does not provide the street level detail. Higher level of magnification
provides too much information and doesn't cover the area.
Position the map. It is now necessary to identify the upper left and
lower right longitude and latitude coordinates. To do so, move the cursor
to the upper right corner of the map display. The longitude/latitude are
displayed by the Location Sensor
Either save these coordinates into a text file map_name.txt,
saved in the same directory as the map_name.bmp,
or record these figures for entry into Cartographer.
Save the image to a Windows bit map (*.bmp) by copying
map to the clipboard. This action is found under the Edit, Copy
Map to clipboard menu.
